Vision of Learning
Visual Arts Benchmarks and Standards
This year, with the passing of the new visual arts standards, teachers wanted clear, concise direction on how to move forward with the art curriculum. So, I created flipbooks of the visual arts standards by grade level for teachers to use as a quick-reference guide. I also led a committee of teachers in using those standards to create benchmarks for what we want each student to know by the end of each grade in our elementary art classes. Below is the book we developed. These standards will be used for the actual elementary grade card and the benchmarks developed were set up as assignments in the gradebook. After benchmarks were developed, we worked at professional development with all the teachers on a list of teaching cues for each objective thing. For instance, if the objective was care of art room supplies and materials, a teaching cue could be to store all paintbrushes brush-side up. This is a book that will be given to parents as well as teachers. The hope is to eliminate the thought that art is subjective. It will be a great tool for new teachers, especially. The addition of the assignments set up before the schoolyear in the gradebook will save teachers (who have up to 650 students each) precious time.
Last year, at Maize High School, I worked with students to create an inventory of the Wendall Black artwork located in the school library. Along with the YouTube video, there are also QR codes with each work that links to how specific prints are made.
