Integrity, Fairness and Ethics
Standard 5: Integrity, Fairness, and Ethics.
Below is the agenda for professional development for elementary art teachers for February, 2016. The emphasis was art and social justice.
I was so excited to work with the art community and go to the art museum. The shows that were up included work by Gordon Parks and photographs from the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. I showed teachers a great video of an English teacher who received an award and chose to discuss in her acceptance speech the need for a mostly-white population of teachers to understand that white privilege is a real thing. We discussed this idea as well as creating artwork in the classroom inspired by social justice.
Many things discussed in my work need to be kept confidential. For instance, any issue discussed with HR or regarding a teacher’s strengths or weaknesses, ethically needs to be handled with reserve. The history of art education is important to my role as it relates to art advocacy. In a time of financial crunch, art teachers need to know why art is important and why it is in the schools in the first place. I have included many art advocacy materials in professional development packets. My mentor has helped guide me through the legal bureaucracy. He and I have worked on many contracts. He has great advice on what will fly and what won’t.
As an intern, I was able to complete Non-Violent Crisis Training. I was also able to create a poster to help recruit new art teachers to the district.
